Lesson 3

Autumn
Autumn

John Clare

The author and the text:

John Clare (1793-1864) was an English poet famous for his celebratory representations of the English countryside and his lamentation of its disruption. Some of his notable collections of poetry are First Love, Snow Storm, The Village Minstrel and Other Poems etc.
The following poem presents a pen-picture of the mellow beauty of autumn in the countryside. As this season comes just before winter, it is characterized by falling leaves, bare branches and strong winds.
(

Text:

Explanation of Stanza 1:

I love the fitfull gusts that shakes
The casement all day,
And from the mossy elm tree takes
The faded leaf away
Twirling it by the window pane
With thousand others down the lane

The poet expresses his affection for the wind that rattles the casement throughout the day and takes all the fading leaves from the mossy elm-tree and twirls them near the window glass, as well as hundreds of other leaves whirled by the wind along the lane.

Explanation of  Stanza 2:

I love to see the shaking twig
Dance till the shut of eve
The sparrow on the cottage rig
Whose chirp would make believe
That spring was just now flirting by
In summers lap with flowers to lie

Clare also enjoys seeing the twig that shakes in the fall weather and dances till the twilight. The sparrow perches on the cottage roof, and its chirping notes convince us that spring has just brushed us by.

Explanation of Stanza 3:

I love to see the cottage smoke
Curl upwards through the naked trees
The pigeons nestled round the coat
On dull November days like these
The co-ck upon the dung-hill crowing
The mill sails on the heath agoing

The poet enjoys seeing the smoke from the cottage curl upward through the bare trees. The pigeons wander around their nest on gloomy November days, while the co-ck crows on a hill of animal manure. The mill is constantly moving through the fields.

Explanation of Stanza 4:

The feather from the ravens breast
Falls on the stubble lea
The acorns near the old crows nest
Fall pattering down the tree
The grunting pigs that wait for all
Scramble and hurry where they fall

Raven’s plumes fall on the stubble lea. The fruit acorn falls from the tree near the old crow’s nest in the autumn, producing a clattering sound, and the pigs grunt and wait for everyone in a frenzy to grab those fruits.

Summary of the poem:

The story describes the speaker’s love for the different aspects of nature and the changing seasons. The speaker expresses their appreciation for the wind that shakes the windows and removes the leaves from the trees. They also enjoy watching the branches dance in the evening and the sparrows on the cottage roof, which make it seem like spring is just around the corner. The speaker also finds beauty in the simple things such as the smoke rising from a cottage, the pigeons nestled around a birdhouse, and the crowing of a rooster. Additionally, the speaker appreciates the small moments in nature such as a feather falling from a raven’s breast and acorns falling from a tree. The story concludes with the pigs scrambling for the fallen acorns. Throughout the story, the speaker’s love for the natural world is evident and they find joy in the simple things that nature has to offer.
