Father's Help

The author and the text:

R.K. Narayan (1906-2001) is one of the leading figures of early Indian literature in English. His notableप्रसिद्ध) works include Malgudi Days and The Guide. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy award in 1958 for The Guide.
The story, an edited excerpt(अंश) from Malgudi Days, is about a young boy called Swaminathan who is unwilling(अनिच्छुक) to go to school, but is forced(जबरदस्ती) by his father to attend school. The story explores(बताता है) how through the events(घटनाओ) that follow, Swami's original reservations(सोच) about his teacher, Samuel, get transformed(बदल गया) considerably(काफी).

Read the following:

Unit 1

Lying(लेते हुए) in bed, Swami realized (अहसास हुआ)with a shudder(झटका) that it was Monday morning. It looked as though only a moment ago(पहले) it was Friday. Already(पहले ही) Monday was here. He hoped(आशा) he didn't have to go to school.

At nine o'clock, Swaminathan wailed(चिल्लाया), "I have a headache(सरदर्द)."

Mother generously(नम्रता से) suggested(सलाह दिया) that Swami might(जरूर) stay(ठहरना) at home. At 9:30, when he ought to(चाहिए था) have been in the school prayer hall, Swami was lying on the bench(चौकी) in Mother's room.

Father asked him, "Have you no school today?"

"Headache," Swami replied.

"Nonsense!(बकवास)) Dress up and go."

"Headache!"

"Loaf(भटकना) about less on Sundays and you will be without(के बिना) a headache on Monday,"

Swami knew how strict(कठोर) his father could be(हो सकते). So he changed his tactics(युक्ति)."I can't go so late to the class."

"You'll have to. It is your own fault(गलती)."

"What will the Teacher think if I go so late."

"Tell him you had a headache and so are late."

"He will scold me if I say so(ऐसा)."

"Will he? Let us see. What is his name?"

"Samuel."

"Does he always scold(डांटना) the students?"

"He is a very angry man. He is especially(खास कर) angry with boys who come in late. I wouldn't like to go late to Samuel's class."

"If he is so angry, why not tell your headmaster about it?"

"They say that even the headmaster is afraid(डरते है) of him(उससे)."

Hindi Translation of Unit 1: बिस्तर पर लेटे-लेटे स्वामी को कंपकंपी के साथ एहसास हुआ कि यह सोमवार की सुबह है। ऐसा लग रहा था मानो कुछ देर पहले ही शुक्रवार हो। सोमवार पहले से ही यहाँ था. उसे उम्मीद थी कि उसे स्कूल नहीं जाना पड़ेगा।

नौ बजे, स्वामीनाथन चिल्लाया, "मुझे सिरदर्द है।"

माँ ने उदारतापूर्वक सुझाव दिया कि स्वामी घर पर ही रह सकते हैं। 9:30 बजे, जब उन्हें स्कूल के प्रार्थना कक्ष में होना चाहिए था, स्वामी माँ के कमरे में बेंच पर लेटे हुए थे।

पिता ने उससे पूछा, "क्या आज तुम्हारा स्कूल नहीं है?"

"सिरदर्द," स्वामी ने उत्तर दिया।

"बकवास! तैयार हो जाओ और जाओ।"

"सिरदर्द!"

"रविवार को कम घूमो और सोमवार को आपको सिरदर्द नहीं होगा।"

स्वामी जानते थे कि उनके पिता कितने सख्त हो सकते हैं। इसलिए उसने अपनी रणनीति बदल दी। "मैं कक्षा में इतनी देर से नहीं जा सकता।"

"आपको करना ही पड़ेगा। यह आपकी अपनी गलती है।"

"इतनी देर हो गई तो टीचर क्या सोचेंगे।"

"उसे बताएं कि आपको सिरदर्द था और इसलिए देर हो गई।"

"अगर मैं ऐसा कहूंगी तो वह मुझे डांटेंगे।"

"क्या वह? आइए देखें। उसका नाम क्या है?"

"सैमुअल।"

"क्या वह हमेशा छात्रों को डांटते हैं?"

"वह बहुत गुस्सैल आदमी है। वह खासकर उन लड़कों से नाराज़ है जो देर से आते हैं। मैं सैमुअल की क्लास में देर से जाना पसंद नहीं करूंगा।"

"अगर वह इतना गुस्से में है, तो अपने प्रधानाध्यापक को इसके बारे में क्यों नहीं बताते?"

Unit 2

Swami hoped that with this his father would be made to see why he must avoid(छोरना) school for the day. But Father's behavior(बर्ताव) took an unexpected(अनाशित) turn(बदलाव). He proposed(लिखा) to send a letter with Swami to the headmaster. No amount of protest(विद्रोह) from Swami would make him change his mind.

By the time Swami was ready to leave(छोरना) for school, Father had composed(रचा) a long letter to the headmaster. He put it in an envelope and sealed(बंद किया) it.

"What have you written, Father?" Swami asked apprehensively(चिंतित होकर).

'Nothing for you. Give it to your headmaster and go to your class."

"Have you written anything about our teacher Samuel?"

"Yes, Plenty(कई) of things."

"What has he done, Father?

"Everything is there in the letter. Give it to your headmaster."

Swami went to school feeling that he was the worst(सबसे खराब) boy on earth. His conscience(याद) bothered(परेशान) him. He wasn't at all sure(निश्चित) if his description(विवरण) of Samuel had been accurate(सटीक). He felt he had mixed up the real and the imagined(काल्पनिक).

Swami stopped on the roadside to make up(ठीक करना) his mind about Samuel. Samuel was not such a bad man after all. Personally(व्यक्तिगत तौर पर), he was much more friendly than the other teachers. Swami also felt Samuel had a special regard(सम्मान) for him.

Swami's head was dizzy(चक्कर) with confusion(उलझन). He could not decide(निर्णय) if Samuel really deserved(लायक होना) the allegations(आरोप) made against him in the letter. The more(ज्यादा) he thought of Samuel, the more Swami grieved(दुखी) for him. To recall(याद) Samuel's dark face, his thin moustache(मुछ), unshaven(बढ़ा हुआ) cheek and yellow coat filled(भर दिया) Swaminathan with sorrow(दुख).

Hindi Translation of Unit 2: स्वामी को उम्मीद थी कि इससे उनके पिता को समझ आ जाएगा कि उन्हें उस दिन स्कूल जाने से क्यों बचना चाहिए। लेकिन पिता के व्यवहार में अप्रत्याशित मोड़ आ गया. उन्होंने स्वामी के साथ प्रधानाध्यापक को एक पत्र भेजने का प्रस्ताव रखा। स्वामी का कोई भी विरोध उन्हें अपना मन बदलने पर मजबूर नहीं कर सकता था।

जब स्वामी स्कूल जाने के लिए तैयार हुए, तब तक पिता ने हेडमास्टर को एक लंबा पत्र लिख दिया था। उसने उसे एक लिफाफे में रखकर सील कर दिया।

"क्या लिखा है पापा?" स्वामी ने आशंकित होकर पूछा।

'तुम्हारे लिए कुछ भी नहीं। इसे अपने प्रधानाध्यापक को दे दो और अपनी कक्षा में जाओ।"

"क्या आपने हमारे शिक्षक सैमुअल के बारे में कुछ लिखा है?"

"हाँ, बहुत सारी चीज़ें।"

असमंजस से स्वामी का सिर चकरा गया। वह यह तय नहीं कर पा रहा था कि सैमुअल वास्तव में पत्र में उसके खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोपों का हकदार है या नहीं। वह जितना अधिक सैमुअल के बारे में सोचता, उतना ही स्वामी उसके लिए दुखी होता। सैमुअल के काले चेहरे को याद करते हुए, उसकी पतली मूंछें, बिना कटे गाल और पीले कोट ने स्वामीनाथन को दुःख से भर दिया।

Unit 3

As he entered(प्रवेस) the school gate, an idea occurred(उत्पन्न हुआ) to him. He would deliver(देगा) the letter to the headmaster at the end(समाप्ति) of the day. There was a chance Samuel might do something during the course of the day to justify(सही ठहराना) the letter.

Swami stood at the entrance to his class. Samuel was teaching arithmetic. He looked at Swami. Swami hoped Samuel would scold him severely(बुरी तरह से).

"you are half an hour late," Samuel said.

"I have a headache, sir." Swami said.

"Then why did you come at all?"

This was an unexpected question from Samuel.

Swami said, "My Father said I shouldn't miss school, sir?

Samuel looked impressed(प्रभावित). "Your father is quite(काफी) right(सही). We want more parents like him."

"Oh, you poor man!" Swami thought, "you don't know what my father has done to you."

"All right, go to your seat."

Swami sat down, feeling sad. He had never met anyone as good as Samuel.

The teacher was inspecting(जाँचना) the home lessons. To Swami's thinking, this was the time when Samuel got most angry. But today Samuel appeared(लगा) very gentle.

"Swaminathan, where is your homework?"

"I have not done my homework, sir," Swami said.

"Why--Headache?" asked Samuel.

"Yes, sir."

"All right, sit down," Samuel said.

When the bell rang(बजा) for the last period at 4.30, Swami picked up(उठाया) his books and ran to the headmaster' room. He found the room looked. The peon told him the headmaster had gone on a week's leave. Swaminathan ran away from the place.

As soon as he entered home with the letter, Father said, "I knew you wouldn't deliver it."

"But the headmaster is on leave," Swami said.

Father snatched(छिना) the letter away from Swami and tore(चीथरे) it up.

"Don't ever come to me for help if Samuel scolds you again. You deserve your Samuel," he said.

Hindi Translation of Unit 3: स्वामी अपनी कक्षा के प्रवेश द्वार पर खड़े थे। सैमुअल अंकगणित पढ़ा रहा था। उसने स्वामी की ओर देखा। स्वामी को उम्मीद थी कि सैमुअल उन्हें कड़ी डांट देगा।

सैमुअल ने कहा, "आप आधे घंटे लेट हैं।"

"मुझे सिरदर्द है, सर।" स्वामी ने कहा.

“तो फिर आये ही क्यों?”

सैमुअल का यह एक अप्रत्याशित प्रश्न था।

स्वामी ने कहा, "मेरे पिता ने कहा था कि मुझे स्कूल नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए, सर?

सैमुअल प्रभावित दिखे. "तुम्हारे पिता बिलकुल सही हैं। हम उनके जैसे और भी माता-पिता चाहते हैं।"

"ओह, तुम गरीब आदमी हो!" स्वामी ने सोचा, "तुम नहीं जानते कि मेरे पिता ने तुम्हारे साथ क्या किया है।"

"ठीक है, अपनी सीट पर जाओ।"

स्वामी उदास होकर बैठ गये। वह सैमुअल जैसे अच्छे व्यक्ति से कभी नहीं मिला था।

अध्यापक घरेलू पाठों का निरीक्षण कर रहे थे। स्वामी की सोच के अनुसार, यही वह समय था जब सैमुअल को सबसे ज्यादा गुस्सा आया था। लेकिन आज

"स्वामीनाथन, आपका होमवर्क कहाँ है?

स्वामी ने कहा, "मैंने अपना होमवर्क नहीं किया है सर।"

"क्यों--सिरदर्द?" सैमुअल से पूछा.

"जी श्रीमान।"

"ठीक है, बैठ जाओ," सैमुअल ने कहा।

जब साढ़े चार बजे आखिरी बार घंटी बजी तो स्वामी ने अपनी किताबें उठाईं और हेडमास्टर के कमरे की ओर भागे। उसने कमरा देखा। चपरासी ने उसे बताया कि हेडमास्टर एक सप्ताह की छुट्टी पर गये हैं। स्वामीनाथन वहां से भाग गया.

जैसे ही वह पत्र लेकर घर में दाखिल हुआ, पिता ने कहा, "मैं जानता था कि तुम इसे नहीं दोगे।"

स्वामी ने कहा, "लेकिन प्रधानाध्यापक छुट्टी पर हैं।"

पिता ने स्वामी से पत्र छीनकर फाड़ दिया।

उन्होंने कहा, "अगर सैमुअल तुम्हें दोबारा डांटे तो कभी भी मदद के लिए मेरे पास मत आना। तुम अपने सैमुअल के लायक हो।"
